As the Minnesota Twins' top executive under the Pohlad family ownership, Jerry Bell has helped negotiate and approve the team's biggest player contracts in history. The Twins and representatives for catcher Joe Mauer, who can become a free agent after next season, have begun talking about a new deal.

Orlando Cabrera is very likely to be a member of the Minnesota Twins in the next hour or two. An A's source tells me that a deal is "very close." Despite a report on ESPN in the past 20 minutes, there is no need for any OK from the commissioner's office. Top Twins prospect Danny Valencia is not a part of the deal, I'm told.

Twins The Twins’ opening day starter struck out four batters in four innings against Pittsburgh on Saturday in his first spring appearance since signing a four-year contract worth $15.25 million, plus a $9.25 million club option for the 2013 season. He gave up just one run in his four innings, a solo homer to Pirates first baseman Adam LaRoche, during a 10-1 loss to Pittsburgh.
