Rockies Trade Rumors
Colorado.rockies.mlb.com is reporting The Rockies will announce on Sunday the signing of veteran right-hander Russ Ortiz to a Minor League contract, and they're close to signing slugger Jason Giambi to a Minor League deal, a baseball official confirmed Saturday night. The two would represent veteran reinforcements for Colorado down the stretch run. mlb.com is reporting The Rockies haven't closed the door on their attempts to acquire Orioles lefty Mark Hendrickson or Nationals lefty Joe Beimel for their bullpen need. Colorado wants a left-handed reliever, but it is not going to give up a prospect like Triple-A second baseman Eric Young Jr. to get one. The Pirates are among the teams that love Young. They have John Grabow, but again, the Rockies aren’t interested in moving Young. Garrett Atkins is drawing interest from many teams. According to the Denverpost the Rockies are in no hurry to ship him out. The Devner Post is reporting that Rockies Manager Clint Hurdle is on the Hotseat. Rockies GM stated on a phone interview with the Devner Post "It's a misnomer to say we are on a daily Clint watch. I am giving Clint the benefit of the doubt for now," O'Dowd said. "It's unfair to blame him solely for us playing like horse manure. I am just as accountable." "So, there's no timeline on this. But we need to play better." Colorado Rockies left-hander Jeff Francis will have exploratory surgery on his pitching shoulder next week and expects to miss the 2009 season. Colorado Rockies starter Jeff Francis could potentially miss the 2009 season if he decides to opt for shoulder surgery. The left-hander was hindered by shoulder issues last season and told TEAM 1040 radio in Vancouver he may have to go the surgical route as his off season program has yet to help matters.
