 | Rays' Baldelli looking for comeback |
Fox Sports is reporting Rocco Baldelliis now a special assistant for the Tampa Bay Rays, working with minor leaguers, but he apparently would like to be back playing in the big leagues, according to FOX Sports Florida.
"It's obviously been a little bit of an adjustment," the 28-year-old told FOX Sports. "This is the first time I haven't been out there trying to get ready to be on the field myself. Still, it's a fulfilling thing. You feel like you're helping and accomplishing something."
Back in his first two seasons (2003 and 2004), Baldelli averaged .285 with a combined 27 homers, 152 RBIs, 168 runs scored and 44 stolen bases for the Rays. But a slew of injuries and figuring out that he had mitochondrial disease pretty much killed his major-league dreams.
Apparently those dreams aren't done. "I still have hopes of playing," he says, "and still feel fully capable of doing that."
Of course, it might never happen since Baldelli has a right shoulder that he hurt last year while throwing from right field to third base while with the Boston Red Sox. Now he rehabs his shoulder each morning before working with the younger players and hopes he can figure out a way to get back into the Big Show.
