 | Beckett talks with Red Sox in final stages |
Espn is reporting Josh Beckett wasn't stellar in the Boston Red Sox 9-7 win over the New York Yankees last night, giving up eight hits and two homers, striking out only one and giving away three walks. But the team is apparently getting very close to finalizing a long-term deal with the ace, according to ESPN.
The deal isn't quite done yet. Beckett apparently didn't demand a fifth year, which is good because the team wasn't planning on giving him one, according to ESPN's source. It is supposedly going to be a four-year deal worth around $70 million. And the health clauses that the team put into the offseason's big free-agent signing, pitcher John Lackey(notes), apparently doesn't exist in Beckett's deal. (For those of you who don't know, Lackey has a five-year deal, but he has to play for the Sox for a sixth year at the league-minimum salary if he has any surgery done on his shoulder during the life of the contract.)
