Chicago Sports is reporting that because Peavy was not interested in the White Sox does not mean that he is not interested in going to the Cubs. Peavy wants to stay in the NL and go to a contender. The Cubs fit both of those criteria. The hold up is the Cubs management. "but may still be in the Cubs plans if something happens with the ownership transition by the end of July."
Pitching against one of the two teams he prefers to play for if he gets traded added another wrinkle to the Peavy saga. He rejected a trade to the White Sox on Thursday, but may still be in the Cubs plans if something happens with the ownership transition by the end of July.
"I had a warm reception in Chicago and I certainly appreciated that," Peavy aid of the Padres recent ttrip to Wrigley Field. "There are certainly Cubs fans everywhere, and I've heard from a couple of them here in San Diego, and some tonight."
Is this all behind him now?
"I'm being as professional as I can about it," he said. "Just going to get ready to pitch Wednesday night in Arizona, and cross those bridges when, and if, we get there. The biggest part is I don't want to be a distraction for this team. We're starting to get back on the right track, and I'm a member of this team right now."
After the game, Cubs manager Lou Piniella lamented about the trade that never came to fruition.
"Look, Peavy is a good pitcher, obviously," Piniella said. "If the White Sox had got him, he wouldn't have pitched tonight, but we would've faced him a couple times in Chicago in the interleague series, so we might be done with him. He's a good pitcher, no question. But we haven't been swinging the bats. C'mon."
Peavy said he he's glad to still be be in San Diego, despite a tempting offer by Sox general manager Kenny Willams to bring him to the South Side.
"It is what it is" Peavy said. "I was honored by Kenny and those guys. It's a first-class organization. As of right now, I decided it was better to be here now."
Peavy struck out 10 Cubs hitters on Friday, and the Cubs struck out 16 times overall.
"The Cubs have got a great team," he said. "Pitching against Carlos Zambrano you know you're not going to get many runs to play with. Fortunately he got one in the first and came up with a couple of bigs ones there in the middle of the game, which is nice. A good night."
