Mariners Rumors
![]() White Sox bench coach Joey Cora was linked to the Seattle Mariners' managing vacancy after the 2008 season before Don Wakamatsu was hired. Wakamatsu's dismissal Monday again has put Cora in the mix to take over the team next season. Cora, who played for the Mariners from 1995 to 1998, declined to comment. But manager Ozzie Guillen, who has tutored Cora since making him part of his coaching staff in 2004, believes he's more than ready to take over. The Mariners, yet again in the market for a new manager after firing Don Wakamatsu, will have plenty of competition for the top candidates.Numerous teams could have vacancies after the season. And so while Daren Brown on Monday was named interim manager through the end of the season, general manager Jack Zduriencik is not going to wait that long to begin the vetting process for a full-time manager. The Tacoma News Tribune is reporting "Cliff Lee appealed his suspension Wednesday in a telephone conference call that took close to two hours – and didn't end with a decision.![]() The Seattle Times is reporting The team is also pleased with progress made by Erik Bedard, who will throw an extended bullpen session of about 60 pitches on Friday. If he keeps looking strong, the team might also look to bump up his projected return from the target date of final week in May, where they are currently aiming. The Seattle Times is reporting The Seattle Mariners' injured ace Cliff Lee(notes) threw 10 pitches from atop a mound yesterday and the team was apparently extremely happy with the results, according to the Seattle Times. Espn is reporting The San Diego Padres recently worked out 17-year-old Dominican Republic pitcher Rafael DePaula, but the word is that the Seattle Mariners are still the frontrunner to sign him, according to ESPN. Fox Sports is reporting Seattle Mariners ace Cliff Lee has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with an abdominal strain, an expected move given the 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner's health troubles this spring. Mlb Fanhouse is reporting The Seattle Mariners are concerned about losing Cliff Lee(notes) to injury and have apparently made an offer to free agent Jarrod Washburn(notes) that he turned down, according to AOL FanHouse. Fox Sports is reporting The Mariners have initiated long-term contract discussions with right-hander Felix Hernandez, but the two sides are far apart, according to a major-league source.![]() Posted by Larry Stone A few stories about Felix Hernandez are emerging from the first day of the GM Meetings in Chicago, and Jack Zduriencik is saying pretty much what he's said all along: The Mariners are fully intent on signing Hernandez, but they are keeping their options open.
